Protective Crowns
Dental crowns are a type of protective “cap” that looks and functions like a normal tooth. We recommend crowns if you have a tooth that is
- Broken down
- Cracked
- Severely decayed
- Treated with a root canal
- Heavily filled
The crown itself protects the underlying structure from further damage or fractures. As so, it’s less likely to break apart and require an extraction.
Getting a crown normally requires two visits. The first is to prep your tooth and take an impression (which will send to one of our labs in Australia). A ceramist will craft the crown for a perfect fit and match. We’ll have you return about two weeks later to bond your cap permanently into place.
We use local anaesthetic and numbing gel to thoroughly numb the tooth/teeth being treated. If you feel a bit nervous you can also request using the green whistle (Penthrox) to help you relax. There’s also a ceiling-mounted television to help you take your mind off of things and distract you from everything else going on around you.
Do you have an open space caused by missing teeth? A dental bridge can fill in the gap by supporting a suspended crown with either end anchored onto the adjacent teeth.
Each of our crowns and bridges are extremely durable. However, they’re not invincible. If you have a teeth grinding habit (bruxism) it’s best to wear a bite splint or mouthguard while you sleep.
Be sure to brush and floss around your restorations the same way you would your natural teeth. Although the porcelain cannot decay, the tooth underneath it may. It’s crucial to keep all of the margins clean through daily flossing and brushing along the gumlines.
When properly cared for, your new restoration can last for several years. We recommend booking six monthly check-ups and cleans so that we can remove any buildup and monitor the integrity of your dental work. Cavity-screening X-rays will be taken from time to time to ensure the surrounding structures are healthy.
Occasionally, some people come to our office because they had a bad experience in the past. If you have a crown or bridge that doesn’t fit properly or was made overseas, you can rest assured knowing we place an extensive amount of attention onto the detail of your new restoration.
