Dental Fillings at Donvale Dental Centre

Filling illustrationDental fillings are small restorations that restore the colour and function of teeth with active decay (cavities). When an area becomes rotten from infection, the decay can spread into adjacent structures unless it is quickly removed.

White Fillings

Composite fillings are minimally invasive to tooth structure. They’re also available in a variety of colours, allowing us to select the shade that best mimics that of your natural smile. As a result, no one should be able to see your filling.

Each of our dentists wear magnification loupes throughout your treatment, allowing them to see additional details for the highest quality and precision of your restoration’s placement.

What to Expect

Since cavities come in all shapes and sizes, the typical visit length can vary on a case-by-case basis (but it’s usually well under an hour).

To ensure your comfort and an efficient procedure, we use a thin rubber dam to isolate the infected tooth from the rest of your mouth. This step also enhances the quality of your restoration, as there’s no chance for the filling to be contaminated with saliva during its placement.

As always, your tooth will be completely numbed to ensure the highest level of comfort. If you feel anxious, we have options to help you relax. There’s also a ceiling-mounted television to help take your mind off of things.

The numbing medication will wear off within a couple of hours. At that time you can use your tooth for normal biting and chewing. If you need major treatment, we’ll call you a day or two later to ensure you’re recovering well and without any concerns.

Cavities do not affect all people the same way. Some individuals will experience little to no symptoms, while others notice several warning signs. Be on the lookout for the following conditions

  • Sensitivity to sweet food/drink
  • Pain when biting down
  • Food catching in your tooth or between teeth
  • Visible holes or staining on a tooth
  • Rough edges you can feel with your tongue
  • Floss shredding or getting caught

Bitewings are a special type of cavity-screening X-rays that we typically take about once per year. They allow us to see the areas between teeth and just under the biting surfaces, where cavities tend to develop first. By comparing your images from year to year, we’ll be able to intercept potentially serious complications while they’re smaller and more conservative to treat.

Our family practice offers comprehensive children’s dentistry, making it easy for everyone in your household to visit the same dentist. After all, children get cavities too! Their primary (baby) teeth are not as strong as permanent teeth. As such, cavities can quickly spread throughout their mouth. Treating the decay with a small white filling will help to prevent the cavity from spreading deeper into the tooth’s nerve or healthy, neighbouring teeth.
